SURROUNDINGS
In Vieste you can make numerous trips and excursions with itineraries rich in art, history, religion and natural riches. Numerous golden beaches and symbolic places: Pizzomunno; the Watchtowers; the Trabucchi; the islet with the Lighthouse of Santa Eufemia; the Architiello di San Felice; Baia delle Zagare and its Faraglioni; the beautiful and unique Sea Caves; the archipelago of the Tremiti Islands: is a marine reserve composed of four islands, reachable by motorboats that depart from the port of Vieste. On the island of San Domino there are the fortified Abbey and the Renaissance church of Santa Maria a mare; the pre-Roman Cathedral of Puglia and the characteristic alleys of the historic center; the Swabian Castle; the Necropolis "La Salata": cemetery complex dating back to the third or fourth century of the early Christian period; for lovers of the mountains, there is the Umbra Forest: majestic nature reserve rich in unique species of flora and fauna is a monument to nature, with its thousand-year-old oaks and giant beeches (we recommend a visit to the museum, the deer park and the lake); Peschici: visit the castle and its characteristic old town; for the faithful there is Monte Sant'Angelo: visit the Basilica of San Michele built on the cave where the Archangel appeared; San Giovanni Rotondo: The village of Gargano is known for being the place where San Pio da Pietralcina lived, the holy friar with stigmata; Lake Lesina and Varano, the two only salt lakes in Italy. All accompanied by excellent Apulian cuisine. 

EXCURSIONS AND GUIDED TOURS:

  • MARINE CAVES OF VIESTE (bookable in structure) with the Leonarda motorboat. Be enchanted by the colors and scents, unique places that you will not forget. Departure from the commercial port and continue along the south coast of the Gargano to Baia delle Zagare, passing through the Pizzomunno Beach, San Felice Bay, Baia dei Campi, Porto Greco, Pugnochiuso/Cava della Pergola, Vignanotica Bay. Every cave hides a story. 

           For families with small children, we recommend a boat trip with Book Boat (for information www.bookboatvieste.it).

  • TREMITI ISLANDS (bookable in structure), to approximately 20 km from the promontory of the Gargano. Departure every day from the Tourist Port of Vieste - North Pier block 8 and arrival at the Island of Domino, with the possibility of making the tour of the entire archipelago composed by the island of Caprara, San Nicola and Panosa.            
  • The ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM E. PETRONE, the ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF SANTA MARIA DI MERINO-NECROPOLIS "LA SALATA" with guided tour, MALACOLOGICAL MUSEUM, THE SWABIAN CASTLE. 
  • UMBRA FOREST, nature reserve with rich and varied flora and fauna, part of the Gargano National Park and recognized UNESCO Partimonio. For the little ones is recommended a visit to the Naturalistic Museum, the artificial lake with fish and turtles, the deer and deer reserve and the Giocabosco park. For adults are organized guided tours of trekking or bike with pedal assistance with Gargano Tour.                                      

Possibility to make excursions in the Gargano National Park with Quad or off-road with Explora Gargano or on foot for adults and children with Gargano Naturalist Guide; to rent dinghies with or without Skipper from the Vieste Marina and to make excursions on horseback.     

CALENDAR OF EVENTS SUMMER 2024:                                                             
For summer 2024, there is a rich calendar of events organized by the Municipality of Vieste:

  • ​June 1, la Vieste en Rose, in the enchanting scenery of the historic center of Vieste The excellences of the wine world land in Vieste for a day of promotion, story and taste. The initiative was born with the aim of creating an engaging and attractive path among the main Apulian wine brands. Coming from all over Puglia, they will come to Vieste to promote his majesty, the rosé. Here then, among the narrow streets of the ancient village of Vieste, elegant "points", decorated with rosé theme, which will become places for meeting, comparison and distribution of wine tastings. Some of these "points" will have the function of real organizational secretariat.
  • 1 and 2 June, Triathlon Adriatic Series. Also this year Vieste confirms the capital of the great Olympic triathlon with the Adriatic Series, the event awaited by many athletes from all over Italy. The event, wanted and organized by the Sports Department with the association Flipper Triathlon, will take place in the heart of Vieste on spectacular routes and in the sea between the small Marina and the island of Sant'Eufemia. 
  • 24, 25 and 26 June 2024, Vieste Archeo Film. The great International Film Festival of archeology, art and environment is back every year, organized by Archeologia Viva (Giunti Editore). Also on this occasion, Vieste will become the capital of archaeological cinema with the screening of documentaries produced worldwide.
  • 28 June 2024, Preview Book Possible. Waiting for the July review, in Vieste arrives Massimo Recaltati. One of the most well-known psychoanalysts in Italy, he heads the Irpa (Institute for Applied Psychoanalysis Research) and in 2003 he founded Jonas Onlus (Center for Psychoanalytic Clinic for New Symptoms).
  • from 10 to 13 July, Festival Musicale Cristalda e Pizzomunno. Also this year Vieste opens to great music. With the third edition of the international music festival Cristalda and Pizzomunno of Vieste, under the artistic direction of maestro Antonello D'Onofrio.
  • June 13, Saint Anthony’s Day. At 8:00 the opening of the festival with the shooting of the mortars and tour of the city bands, at 19:45 the procession of the saint accompanied by the Bishop. At 21:30 there will be the return of the procession in Cattedrlae and ignition of fireworks at Marina Piccola, to follow at 22:00 great concert, free admission, at the Marina Piccola. At the end of the events at 24:00 fireworks show at the tourist pier (Porto nuovo).
  • July 15, 2024, Porto Rubino. The sea to protect, the sea as inspiration, as a place to find yourself. The complex, controversial, free sea, the sea: the origin. 'idea is very simple: a boat set up like a stage, a captain of navigation and a trip. The boat anchors in a port, welcomes as guests artists of national fame, we play, we raise the anchor and we start again. During the trip we fish stories. The common thread is the theme of environmental sustainability and the sea in particular.  At sunset Vieste will frame the first stage of the tour at the beach of Marina Piccola.
  • 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 July, Festival Book Possible. The literary festival among the most famous in Italy, to the point of being considered one of the most successful events in the cultural scene with many hundreds of guests for each edition. 
  • from 29 July to 3 August, Festambiente Sud. The national festival of Legambiente for Southern Italy, a real ecofestival of southern issues and cultural quality of the territory, under the artistic direction of Chiara Civello.
  • from 31 August to 6 September 2024, Vieste in Love. All in love with Vieste. Its sea, culture, food, people. The idea has a specific objective. Vieste in Love wants to transform the city of Cristalda and Pizzomunno in the city of eternal Love. Every kind of Love. A love declined in a thousand ways: for nature and territory, for animals and children, for life and the sea. A whole week with over 70 events dedicated to love in its multiple expressions. 
  • October 2024, Orienteering-Viestival. The Gargano is the ideal place for the practice of orienteering: it can offer unique scenarios such as the Umbra Forest and historic centers such as Vieste that after hosting in 2022 the world championships is preparing this year to organize in October the international meeting "Orienteering-Viestival.

EXHIBITIONS OF ART:

  • Solo exhibition Andy Warhol, the founder of world pop art (40 original autographed works on display in the Castle) - April/September 2024.
  • Personal exhibition Oliviero Toscani  - Profession photographer 80 shots of the greatest Italian photographer exhibited at the Archaeological Museum "Petrone".

The events will take place in locations such as Marina Piccola or the historic center of Vieste. A unique opportunity to experience the city in all its facets, with a series of cultural, sporting and entertainment events not to be missed.
